Parenting can be a wonderful gift, but many of life’s challenges can make it difficult. One problem that many parents never wish upon their children is teen pregnancy. Teenagers are not ready to become parents. They are still kids themselves, after all.
Parents can find themselves facing this problem. It is up to you, the parent, to share your family values in your children to help avoid becoming a grandparent at a young age.
First, think about what your values are and what you believe in. If you have a certain faith, share that as well. Some common values regarding sex and relationships include honesty, equality, responsibility and respect. Acting on your values and being a good role model are powerful messages for your children.
It might come easily or it might feel awkward, but sit your child down and talk with them. It is important to have a conversation with them and not just talk at them. Let them tell you how they feel or what they believe. This will open the door for you to add your values to something they already think or feel.
Many children just want to be loved and want to please their parents. Help them in their journey by loving them, showing interest in their lives and praising them when they open up to you. Don’t doubt yourself, just be open with your child and make sure they know your values.
Remember to start the conversation early—it’s better to be safe than sorry. You don’t want to wait until your child is already having sex to have this discussion.

Getting routine shots from your doctor is never fun, but getting HPV is worse.
Protect yourself by getting vaccinated. The HPV Vaccine is cancer prevention. Ask your doctor about what you can do to stay safe, or call 865-215-5000 to schedule a vaccination appointment at the Health Department.
