Looking for the Right Things in a Boyfriend or Girlfriend

Published: March 19, 2013

A lot of people start dating for the first time when they’re teenagers, and like many other new experiences, there can be some bumps in the road.

Just like you probably weren’t jumping off ramps and popping wheelies the first time you got on a bicycle, figuring out what you want in a relationship can take some time. So, what should you be looking for in a boyfriend or girlfriend?

The first thing you should do is read our foundations of a healthy relationship post. That is a good starting point.

Next, you should figure out what’s important to you. People are different and place different values on different qualities. For some people it is important that their mate has the same religious beliefs, for instance. You need to consider all the factors that go into what makes a person who they are and decide which are important to you.

At the same time, you should realize that no one is perfect. Everyone has flaws, and it is up to you to decide what is acceptable and what isn’t.

Most importantly, you should look for someone who treats you right, won’t put you down and accepts you for who you are.
