Respect Yourself

How do you view yourself? This may seem like one of those rhetorical questions that’s not really important for you personally, but the way we view and think of ourselves directly affects the way we treat ourselves and the choices we make.

Often it seems like we have more reasons to be frustrated with ourselves than to respect ourselves. We are failures in our own eyes, full of frustrations and worries, rather than people of value and potential that is meaningful and significant. However, that is what I am and that is what you are—a person of value and significance with the ability to achieve dreams, care for yourself and others, and truly make a difference in the life of another person and the world.

Truly understanding your value and potential should greatly affect the way you treat yourself and desire to be treated by others. You deserve to be respected and to respect yourself with the decisions you make and the actions you take. Specifically talking about relationships and sexuality, the way you view and respect yourself directly affects the way you care for other people and make these important decisions for yourself. An example of respecting your boyfriend or girlfriend would be talking about your relationship and commitment to each other and creating physical and emotional boundaries that are comfortable to both of you and that you both commit to keep in your relationship. Respecting and protecting yourself would be keeping those commitments and refusing to compromise the boundaries you have set for yourself. If your boyfriend or girlfriend respects you and knows that you respect yourself, they should not ask you to compromise your boundaries in the relationship. Choose to respect yourself and your significant other because you are both valuable, important, and full of potential—and choose to show this respect with the decisions you make.
